Just thought I would post to let people know that the 765 2.1ghz cpu DOES NOT work in a HP Compaq nc8000. I read this post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=54399

Which is now closed so I couldnt reply to it, and it suggests that it should be no problem to install this cpu in this laptop. This is not the case. I have just bought one of these CPU's and installed it, it wont boot up, no screen, hard drive light stays on, no go.

Just thought I might help someone not to waste their money.

**** UPDATE **** It DOES work in this laptop, there is a problem with the latest BIOS file on the HP site, read on...

Try update the BIOS of your nc8000 to the latest (F.18, if it isn't already) before you swap the CPU, and especially if you're upgrading from a Banias Pentium M to a Dothan.

No guarantee that it would work (but probably worth a try); the 765 isn't in the supported CPU list.

    Hiya,

I updated my BIOS to the latest version on the HP site. There was an anomily in that the BIOS date of the file was 2004, but the bios was meant to be much newer than that (2007).

HP replied saying that the version I download (F.0C I) was the latest one and to ignore the date (the bios update program warned me I was installing an older BIOS than the one on the machine already). But HP assured me that I have the latest version regardless of the date issue.

This is the one I used.

Do you know for a fact that it works as it really looks like it does not. I really dont want to waste any more time on it if it does not but if ive done something wrong and you have seen one work in this notebook please let me know. Also F.18 is not the latest version according to the site:

F.0C is, which I have (but had some strange date issue).

What CPU were you using before? (speed and banias/dothan if you know)

Honestly, I don't know if the 765 will work. I had a Banias 1.4GHz before and upgraded to a Dothan 1.8GHz (Pentium M 745) and got a black screen until I realised I had to update the BIOS for it to recognise.

Now that I check it, funnily enough my nc8000 is currently using F.13.

Check this out, I strongly doubt that F.0C is the latest.
    Version: F.18 (30 Aug 2006)
    Version: F.0C (5 Mar 2004)

I am running the 1.6ghz CPU at the moment (Intel Pentium M processor 725 – 1.6GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400MHz Front Side Bus).

This page says the 755 is the highest

    http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service...447626+1247579121936+28353475&threadId=973145

I know that Im on BIOS F.0C for sure. I can try F.18 if you think it might work but thats proably a step backwards in bios revisions...

Sounds like the symptoms are the same as what you had, but maybe the latest BIOS still doesnt support it..

Any further advice would be good. Ill post if it works or not on F.18 BIOS too.

You can download CPU-z from CPUID.COM to find out the exact model of your CPU.

Success with the Pentium M 765 from scotchfx on this page. :D

    That's definitely a Banias, 0.13um and 1024kB L2 cache.
    A Dothan Pentium M would be 0.09um and have 2048kB L2 cache.

I'm pretty sure the 765 will work with F.18, just make sure you update the BIOS with the 1.6GHz processor installed, before you swap the CPU.

    Ill try that now...

    OK it worked!!

Thank you very much for your help, I hope the laptop will be a bit quicker now... All I need is the 7200prm 160gb drive and im set, I have 2gb of supertalent ram in it already and another 160gb SATA drive in the multibay...

I guess the latest HP BIOS (F.0C) isnt actually the latest version at all (as illustrated by the BIOS date shown in the BIOS differing from the date posted on the HP site). Strangely enough the date on F.18 also does not match the date listed on the site...

Does anyone from HP read this forum?? If so your BIOS files are wrong, and your support team are also wrong as they tell you its all fine but it really is not...
