Hi!
I have a 13-month old (note the 1 month post-warranty problem) HP DV 1000. It's been great, until last weekend I had a boot problem, which I fixed by booting to the Windows CD and running chkdsk /r. I had recently installed Hi-Q Recorder software, and used the mic input to record some cassette tape music with that software. I think that's unrelated...
Now, since fixing the boot problem, the fan has been squealing. Not turning on any more than it used to, but emitting a mid-to-high-pitched squeal as it runs. Very annoying. Like, I can't listen to music on the laptop. Youtube is no fun anymore.
While I've taken desktop computer covers off to play with the components, I'm hesitant to do so with the notebook, since I'm sure it's all packaged more precisely. My knowledge is intermediate: not a programmer, but not ignorant, either. And I have a very talented mechanical engineer at my disposal to help.
Any advice?
Thanks!

Fan Squeal would be indicative that the fan's bushing are dried up (lacking lubricant). The fan will eventually slow down to a stop if you continue using it.
There 2 things you can do;
Replace the fan with a new unit (Your best best will be to source it from HP)
Try to lubricate the bushings, I would suggest that you first remove the fan from the notebook before attempting this as you do not want excess lubricant leaking into the notebook.
Best regards,

Yes, frenchnew is right. The fan is most likely becoming less lubricated, and it can result in it stopping for good, which could mean that the notebook can overheat. If your still under warranty, then HP should be able to replace it, which will save yourself alot of time and effort.
Alternatively, if it isn't under warranty, then you will need to purchase the aprt, and install it yourself. You should be able to remove a arge panel under the notebook, from which you should have access to the fan. The fan can be taken off without removig the whole cooling system, and from there you should be able to replace it. Be careful with other components if you do decide to replace the fan yourself. As you have said, the components are packed together in a small space, and extra care should be taken to avoid touching or moving these components.
