I was wondering will any PC2-5300 DDR2 667 sodimm work in the HP pavillion dv6103nr? Some memory sites that sell memory say the laptop has certain chips or something and not any one will work, is this true?

    I was looking at a PC2-5300 DDR2 667 chip that says M470T6554CZ3-CE6

512MB 2Rx16 PC2-5300S-555-12-A3 on it and am not sure if i should buy it or get a chip straight from HP. the dv6103nr came with 512MB and I want to add another 512MB chip to it.

The dv6103 has the Core Solo T1350 which has a 533MHz FSB(133*4), so you are pretty much limited DDR2 266/533(PC4200) memory modules. You can still use DDR2 333/667(PC5300) modules but they will downclock & run at 533MHz.

You can use any brand(as long asit is reliable) as long as you buy 200pin DDR2 SODIMM since that is what is used in almost all laptops.

If the module in it know is an PC2-5300 DDR2 667 like HP told me and I put a 4200 chip in it will it still run at the 533mhz or do I need matching chips?

It should run at PC2-4200 since if you pair a faster memory module with a slower one, then both sticks will run as fast as the slowest one. Its is not necessary to have matching modules, but in some cases the compatibility will be better if you use same speed sticks.
