I just got an HP Dv7-2277cl, It has 4gb of DDR3 ram from the factory and I saw that HP offers this computer with 6gb of ram. I was wondering how I would go about upgrading to 6gb of ram since 8gb is about $400. Right now it has 2gb X 2, so I thought I could just get one 4gb module but I wasn't sure if it would be compatible or if I would have to replace both modules, since I don't know the memory speed and timing from the factory.
System Specs:
Windows 7 Premium x64
Intel Core2Duo P7550 2.27ghz
4gb DDR3 ram
640gb Hard drive (320gb X2)
ATI Raedon 4650 1gb DDR3(Dedicated card)

Yea, the 4gb DDR3 should work fine, although you'll have to get the 1066 not the 1333.

So do you think it would be safe to get this and be pretty sure that it would work with my laptop.

That DIMM should work fine.
Single 4GB stick prices are very high right now; for comparison, a 2x2GB kit is around $90. Unless you absolutely need the extra 2GB, I suggest waiting. Perhaps try tuning up your computer to cut down on memory usage.
Also, Newegg's prices seem to be high as well. Last week they had a Transcend 4GB stick for $180, now it is $210. -

Agree that RAM prices are high, but they're not going to go lower from any indicators I can see or have read about.
If you need the RAM, buy it, but make sure you need it. -
Ok, thanks for all the help guys.

Hey Guys, Well I got some extra money so I bought 8 GB of DDR3 ram for my HP DV7. Well I got it today and installed it and when I went to turn it on the screen didn't light up, all that happened was the fans and lights came on and the caps lock and num lock lights were flashing. When I put the factory 4 GB back in it works find as well as when I put in one 2 GB module and one 4 GB module for a total of 6 GB. The only time it doesn’t work is when I try to install all 8 GB. Any ideas what I should do next?

Funny? Does the 4X2 work for both 4GB modules? It's a simple enough install as long as you're meticulous about handling the modules and take caution to grounding yourself.

i'm quite suprised that it doesn't work.. the Dv7 should easily work with 8GB... u might have a faulty RAM stick that is causing the problem.
