It is just simply incredible to me that HP doesn't want anyone to be able to upgrade their sold laptops.... then again, I guess they want to be like Apple?

Case in point.. the 2nd empty bay, on most DV7s, is also vacant for the required long SATA HDD cable reguired to put another HD or SDD into that spot.

No problem.... but why can't us loyal and trusting HP folks get that cable to put something into that empty hole? No one, including HP has those cables to sell nor are they apprarently helping anyone else to make them by giving the specs to others....???

Who at HP is making us happy HP owners into distrustful and future Asus or Lenovo or anyone else laptop buys? Hell... we can get anything we want for our Apple craps.... if we pay... so at least they aren't hiding crap?

I need a second HD bay SATA 3 cable for a second HDD.... who has em and who has em for just the freakin cable????

That is unfortunate; HP has been doing this for a while. Not sure if other manufacturers are following suit.

Essentially you have to get the system from the factory configured with two drives, otherwise you're stuck in the situation you're in.

Have you tried asking in one of the owner's lounges?

I had this same problem with a recent upgrade to my brothers dv7. You would think they could throw in the extra cable and caddy. The cheapest place I found them were from newmodeus if you're buying in the US. Don't buy from HP, they charge like 50+. For his 4270us we needed to buy the caddy as well.. unless you want the drive flapping around loose in there.

    2nd HDD Caddy & Cable for HP dv7-4000, dv7-5000, dv7t SE [HP-dv7-4000] - $38.55 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

Make sure you get the right one! The older DV7 cables look and function the same but they're not long enough.

Search component supplier list -> "DV7"
"This search gave 477 results in the Product Guide..."
477 different DV7 models, and that's not even all of them. Just the ones sold in EU area I think.

Some DV7 have no cables but hard discs are directly connected to the motherboard. Therefore it's essential to identify what DV7-series laptop is in question, they have different internal layout and connectors, you might end up ordering wrong cable.

So, turn the laptop upside down and write down the actual model number.
    DV7-1110 / DV7-4000 / etc... That will tell what you need :)
