Hello all. I just purchased a HP DV7-3163cl from a pawn shop. I want to install a 6gb/s SSD in it for maximum lovely performance. Ive beat my head around in circular searches and circular searches and I cant figure out what my SATA compatibility is. Crucial says that my laptop is compatible with their BX100 250gb device, but im wary after some research that my laptop might not have the ability to handle 6.0gb/s.

Ive searched and searched to no freaking avail.
    Please help, and thank you!

    Hp dv7-3163cl
    AMD Turion II dual-core M520
    motherboard 574679-001 (hp)

That's about all the relevant information I can come up with, as I know what ram etc I have installed doesn't matter a hoot toot.

To be honest, I don't care if its a crucial SSD. I just care if my laptop can process the 6.0gb/s.

    Thanks again!

You need to find out if it SATA II or SATA III compatible.

That's actually why I posted this thread. To find out if anyone knew if my device is SATA II or III compatible...Or knows how to find out...or anything.

That's a budget laptop from 2010, so you're looking at SATA II most likely. As in 99.99% likely.

Which, in all fairness, doesn't matter at all. Any newer SSD - and Crucial is not a bad choice generally speaking - will simply downshift to SATA II speeds and give the machine the best performance it can possibly output.

Do bear in mind that for most people it's the latency - not the actual transfer speeds - of the SSDs that make them so well-liked nowadays.

    Happy upgrading.

Thank you! I appreciate your time! Although, what are you talking about when you mention the latency? I did a check on my laptop and my write speed is 74mbs and read 100ishmbs, so with a SATAII id be perfectly happy doubling that...I know the card claims 500 but even 200 would be awesome, or thereabouts.

    Thanks again!

hey tillerofearth thanks! Now why the MX100 over the BX100? Im just curious to what you see that I don't? Im not at all familiar, what better? Is it a newer SSD? The 256 model is the one ill go with, unless I can find a cheaper, higher priced one elsewhere.

    Thanks for the links too!

I figure once im done with this computer I can always pull the SSD and slap it into something else as well!

BX100 is Crucial's bottom-of-the-barrel offering, and actually had some of MX100's features removed...

BX100 is *very* new, as in "too new for my liking" while MX100 has been tested thoroughly and seems to be the best option in the given price range, at least IMO.

    Happy shopping.
