I have been browsing this forum for some time and found lots of valuable information. However there is one more thing that I cannot find anywhere, therefore I would like to ask all of you for help.

    I have Pavillion dv9640us:
    - Intel C2D T5250
    - NVIDIA GF8600M GS
    - 3GB DDR2 RAM

GPU started overheating recently, i have to take the laptop apart and clean it properly. So here goes the question:

I wanted to upgrade GPU to GF9600M GT, coz as far as I know both cards use the same connection type with the motherboard. Is that true? It would be splendid if I could swap GPUs and have more power without really changing the laptop.

After doing some research online I found 2 types of 9600m gt - equipped either with DDR2 or DDR3 memory, however with my current C2D the DDR3 one wouldn't perform much better, or would it?

So.. any idea if such upgrade is possible? Please advise...

    Many thanks!

Do you know if your laptop have the MXM on the video card? A lot of older laptops, and newer ones that have the intergrated graphics card, have the graphics card soldered on the motherboard.

I'm not entirely sure whether it has MXM connector. Been trying to google it, but no luck :/

I'm not keen on taking the laptop apart as I am using it nearly 24/7 and dont have replacement. However the repairman I know told me that the video is not integrated with MB.

One of the reason I was asking the question is to verify the info he gave me. ;p

I have the dismounting manual somewhere in my files, maybe it has got detailed specs :)

You will have to take the notebook apart to find out whether it uses MXM or not, unless you can find solid evidence that clearly shows that it is MXM.

And the DDR3 model would perform 15% - 20% better than the DDR2 version.

If the notebook uses MXM, then instead of 9600m GT, perhaps you should look into Ati Mobility Radeon 4650?
I know that the nvidia solution might be more accessible, still the ati one is much more powerful (provided of course you take the DDR3 version).
