I have an HP HDX16t-1200 CTO laptop which is 11 months old; recently it has started shutting down hard with no warning, no error message, etc. I contacted HP and they had me flash the BIOS to version F32, which they indicated would solve the problem; it has not. It is not overheating; sits on a platform with 2 fans. The Virt Technology switch in the BIOS is enabled. Disk, battery and memory tests all pass.
Any ideas anyone may have will be greatly appreciated; unfortunately, but not surprising, HP has no idea as to the issue.
System specs: Intel Core2 Duo CPU, T9900 @ 3.06GHz 3.07GHz
64-Bit O/S
6.00 GB RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate
Thanks so much!

What's the CPU temperature before it shuts off? How do you know it's not overheating?
-
My assumption only. How can I find the CPU temperature? Thanks!

That's a solution that your friend google can help. OCing guys should know. I think you can get it using CPU-Z. Start the program and dump info even when the program is running in backgroup (there should be an option for this). It should dump info into a file of your choosing.

If you can get your hands on some 3rd party diagnostic software like Eurosoft it might help.
I can say though, that in my job I come across plenty of HDX's with defective motherboards, and this is one way in which they manifest themselves. The only way to diagnose it though, is to install a new one...
EDIT: on second thought, I've also heard of the HDX heatsinks actually warping, and making pour contact with the CPU/GPU. I processed a couple of RMAs to HP (for HDX's if I can remember correctly, in which this was the issue).
Also, check your fan? -
HWMonitor is the program you want. Either that or Coretemp is good.
Also, clean your fans out with some compressed air. Do not let the fan spin, either.
