Previously in this forum, I read that it's possible to upgrade an HP dv9548us from 2GB to 4GB. The closed forum link is: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=250774
However, according to HP, the maximum RAM for their dv9548us model is 2GB - see the following link:

Has anyone had experience upgrading the dv9548us from 2GB to 4GB and if so,why would HP tell me that "as your notebook dose not support 4 GB RAM so you could not upgrade it, because it could create the compatibility issue".
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Maximum is 4 GB for all dv2000s, dv6000s, and dv9000s.

I assume the "compatibility issue" is a limitation by a 32 bit operating system.
It should physically support 4GB of RAM, but if you are using a 32 bit OS, then your computer will only be able to utilize 3GB - 3.5GB. This problem can be fixed by installing a 64 bit operating system. -
Thanks so much to Lithus and CZX58 Shadow for your replies! One more question before I purchase the sticks. Which pair of Corsair 2GB RAM Sticks should I purchase? 1)PC2-6400 200-pin DDR2 Notebook Memory or 2)PC-5300 667MHz SODIMM Notebook Memory. Here is the hotlink to J&R's site that describes each in detail:

Any of those 2 will do .. just buy the cheaper one... the one with higher speed will automatically downclock to to the Max RAM speed supported by ur notebook..

Thanks again to all that provided input/advice to my query. Based on price and quality, I purchased two Crucial RAM sticks from B&H Photo and Video (2GB 200-PIN DDR2 SODIMM 256Mx64PC2-5300) for $39 each, including free shipping.
The install was brainless and the notebook is now utilizing 3.1GB of the 4GB that were installed. Remarkable increase in speed. I highly recommend this upgrade for the price. -
