Hello. I'm having an issue with a HP Omen 17 laptop (Windows 10) and external Roofull CD/DVD drive (purchased separately) that I bought a couple of months ago. The external CD/DVD drive will not read DVD-R/RW discs whether they are empty or already written to. Through experimenting I have observed the following: commercial audio CDs play fine, CD-R discs play fine, and commercial DVD movie discs play fine. My old HP Envy (internal CD/DVD drive) comes up with the standard 'what would you like me to do w/ empty discs' message that I'm use to seeing. This is actually the second external drive I have this issue with (though they look similar, just different names (probably the same place in china)). Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been working with the drive tech support people for weeks now to no avail.
Thanks,
L.

I had to double-check the date of this post '12 minutes ago'.
Why are you still using CD/DVD drives in 2021? When time, effort, and reliability is considered, USB 'keys' are a much better option in almost any situation. You can buy a 100 pack for $20... if you wanted to match the reliability and dependability of CD/DVD R/RW media.
Time to drop this positively archaic method of storing bits that depends on how aligned the media and drive-heads match between the optical writer 'wrote' it and the optical writer that 'reads' it.Tech Junky and Starlight5 like this. -

The tech gods are trying to tell you something w/ 2 drives not working.
RIP the discs to a HDD and move on into the new millennium.Starlight5 and tilleroftheearth like this. -

I just hope that is possible for the OP.
If a disc can't be read, it may be possible to get it done 'professionally'. Depending on how important the data is, of course.
