    Hello everyone, :D

Just joined the forums after some months of looking up solutions to some of my problems. Although, now I am stuck at a question for an upgrade to my laptop.
I have a HP Pavilion DV1660se i945gm chipset, Everest shows it to be a socket M t2300 1.6ghz. What I am interested is swapping it out for a t2700 2.3 ghz, first would it even boot? I saw the multiplier max for the mother board is 10, and the t2700 needs 14, so is there a way to make it work, or that is it, no more upgrade. :(

Multipliers don't cause problems, if the CPU is well-supported by the BIOS.

Update the BIOS to the latest version, and checkout the enhancements listed....

Thanks for the quick reply! :)

Just in case after the latest BIOS is upgraded, and the multiplier is still 10, I would assume it would not be running 2.3ghz, am I correct?

    Uhm, yeah..

By the way, is there any specific reason behind the upgrade.

Yeah, well first I really like the laptop, I have had it for about 2 years, I like the color, and the extended battery that lasts which seems to be for a good 5 hours or so.

I also wanted to get some experience in upgrading laptops, starting off with my own of course. :D

I have shopped around for replacement laptops, and the one I have just seemed to have everything I need in it's physical build. It's big, but not so that I can't transport it. I was just thinking a little of extra dollars into it, and I can extend the life of it before I really need to get a new one.

i have the same laptop dv1700cto. let me know how it goes. i upgraded from a t2400 to a t7200. and my bios boot screen is showing that I have a celeron cpu.

but vista recognize it as a duo core t7200.

Is the t7200 a Core 2 Duo opposed to just a core duo?

I'm going to need to research the motherboard a bit more, I could not really find any specs on it except for the one listed by Everest.

Youve misunderstood what Multipliers are. They are within the CPU itself. Its used to dynamically lower the clock. Each chip will have different multipliers, its not some sort of requirement.

Its a Socket M Core 2 Duo. Giving you the following choices:

WOW how convenient i was just coming here on this same issue with the same model laptop. Im going to try to upgrade it to a t5300 next week ill report how it goes. I just need to find a bios now. Also i would not go to a t2700 get a t5x00 serries cpu because they are 64 bit.

Just a note of wisdom. Try to go for a core2duo instead of a core duo processor. I just went through the process of upgrading my Dell E1505. I wanted more cpu power so I bought a T2500 to replcae my T5300. The T2500 has a faster clock speed and FSB, so everyone on here pretty much figured it will be faster. Well after running SisSandra and V-RAY (rendering software for CAD), the T5300 even with its lower clock speed performed much better than the T2500.

The Merom core is much more efficient than the Yonah core, so I advise going for a T5300/T5500 or a T7200 if you can get a good deal on any of them.
I was disappointed after my upgrade to a T2500 cause it was actually slower, so I set my eyes on a T7400 and I will be getting one in soon.

Check out my benchmarks of the T2500 versus my T5300, they will backup my claim:

    Good luck with the upgrade

Now the BIOS updates don't mention anything about the Core 2 Duos, so it'll be kinda of a risk to install a Core 2 Duo.

Now, multipliers won't be a problem. Multipliers cannot downclock, since they are hard-coded, and if a particular frequency or CPU is not supported, the notebook will not boot with that CPU.

Well, you could try out the T2700 (or T2500) since they belong to the same family and are likely to be supported, or go for a refundable T7200, and see if it works....

I have the i945PM chipset in my dell and it supports the T2xxx, T5xxx and T7xxx Socket M cpu's
I think the i945GM, the original poster has should also be the same. The only difference is the graphics, as denoted by the P or lackof, with the G.

I just updated to f.12, the esupport.com Bios Update Agent still shows it an old Bios, do they keep a bios that is not known to HP?
