    Hi Everyone,

I have an HP Pavilion DV4-2045DX entertainment notebook. It's about like 2 years old now and it heats up way too much. I actually took the whole thing apart like four times now to get to the motherboard and replace the thermal paste on the CPU & GPU. I first used a really high quailty thermal paste and applied it on and using compressed air blew out all the dust and vents and the fan but it still heated up even after that. (And it was only sitting on wood suface flat and web browsing) The second time i cleaned that whole paste off and applied artic silver 5 and it still is heating up. Every thing inside the machine is clean no dust at all. (I've disassembled it like a million times now) The ram is working, so is the hdd, i have just replaced the keyboard bezel, and did everything but it still heats up in just like 10 minutes. Please please tell me how to fix this issue. Is there like some update that needs to be done (I already restored factory OS on there). Please help out.

    Thank You!

Assuming you didn't apply too much paste and the fan isn't broken, the heatpipe might have gone bad (which hasn't happened to me but I've read it happens).

    Which part is overheating?

The DV series is somewhat notorious for getting hot. It has been a common defect that HP did not address for years. Make sure you are reapplying a proper amount of paste and reseating the thermal pad correctly; if it's not aligned or isn't tightened enough, heat will not dissipate properly.

There's not a lot you can do given that it's a simple design flaw, but you can try a chill pad and/or perhaps mods to the internals, but the latter requires care and I can't recall the layout of the guts in the DV4.

I have the same model as you do and what I did was replace the cooling fan as it sounded loud and on it's way out. I also did dissemble the complete laptop and cleaned out the dust bunnies. I also modified my cooling for the GPU but doing some bending and adjustments to make the gap closer. And I got rid of the foam type pad and just used silver paste with the modified heatsink so it was close gap and used it that way and the fan works and blows out more heat. That to me was a better way to go to dissipate the heat better. But this is from my experience in doing mods to cooling heatsink so if you plan to do this you need to be careful.

Yes the DV2000, DV6000, DV9000 and some DV4 with AMD chipset had the notorious dead GPU along with some that had the Nvidia. But if you haven't had the problem-if you modified and removed the foam pad and just mod the heatsink so the gap was closer and just used thermal paste will help to prolong the lifespan and help improve the heatsink thermal capacity. I know I put a dime between the gap of a DV6000 that had the nvidia it fit the gap and that helped to improve the heatsink and now it doesn't shutdown but improves and move the heat away better. The person whom I did the simple fix for told me it doesn't shutdown and can be running for hours on end with no shutdowns. So in this case we caught the problem that in time and did the simple fix that will now extend the life of the laptop.
