I can't seem to get a straight answer on whether or not I can put a SATA II drive in this notebook. The specs say SATA I 150 Gb but the drive specs says it's a SATA 300 g/b.

Anybody out there replaced there drive in this notebook?

    Thanks,

    Gary

BTW, Newegg, zipzoomfly, HP, Western digital all could not or would not help.

    I'm very frustrated.

Yes, you can put a SATAII 3.0Gb/s hard drive in your notebook. I have the HP Pavilion dv6500t (see sig), which is basically the same laptop as yours. Currently, I am using a Western Digital Scorpio 320GB WD3200BEVT hard drive (see link) after having swapped out the craptastic 250GB Fujitsu HDD that was originally shipped with the laptop.

The difference between the two hard drives is like night and day, although I plan to upgrade to a 500GB Western Digital 2.5" HDD very soon.

Thank you very much garetjax but I'm worried the T on the end of your 6500 might mean it's a newer version that can handle the WD. Mine is only a 6500 CTO. I can't seem to find any specs detailed enough to tell if there is a HDD interface difference. Anybody know?

    Thanks again

The "T" in the dv6500 T means that it is a dv6500 with an Intel processor. The entire dv6500 series (including CTO, like mine) uses the same form factor, and there is no difference between the HDD interfaces across this entire line.

I personally have put in a Seagate SATA II hard drive in my notebook and it runs quite well. A 3.0Gb/s SATA II hard drive will be able to run on a SATA 1.5Gb/s interface (just not at 3.0 Gb/s, only 1.5 Gb/s).

Yep, SATA I and II are interchangable, that's the way the standard was designed.

Your laptop supports SATA II (also known as SATA 300) drives
Good drives to look at are the
    Hitachi 7K320, (320gb 7200rpm)
    Hitachi 5K500.B (500gb 5400rpm)
    Western Digital WD3200BEKT (320gb 7200rpm)

The WD5000BEVT is another good option, however, the Hitachi 5K500.B is slightly faster in real world applications and uses less power.

    That's the way it is.

So either get a SATA I or SATA II drive. It does not matter.

Garetjax has one and said so. Plus I know for a fact I have suggested more than one person with the same laptop to get a 7K320 and they worked in there laptops

Not all laptops support SATA 300 drives, the Clevo D900K is one of them. The older 4.x series motherboards only support SATA 150 drives. You need to physically change the firmware of the drive with Hitachi tool in order for the drive to be recognized by the system

    Western Digital WD3200BEKT (320gb 7200rpm)

I use this as my data/secondary drive in my laptop and it's awesome...

Once you remove the old HDD, you need to remove the black plastic adapter where the power and data connection points are at and install it on the new hard drive. The adapter should easily come right off.

The adapter should look something like this...

...and look like this when you install it:

Out of curiosity, What hard drive did you end up getting?

That's exactly what's happened. I tried to edit the post so people would see that I had already figured it out, but I guess it didn't update in time.

But Thank You Very Much for the effort. Hopefully it will help others as well.

Good choice. Probably the fastest traditional hard drive available at this moment.

Guys-Posting this for my son. He has the same dv6500t as Garetjax, and would you all still recommend the same hard drive as above for a replacement? His hard drive died and is in need of a replacement. Wanted to run this by you all since I know nothing about this stuff, other than that a couple of months (orginal post) is light years behind times.

Thanks in advance for any help.
