HP Pavilion dv5000 won't boot into Windows XP normally but will boot in safe mode. I want to do a repair from the Windows cd but the cd drive won't read. I assume I need to reinstall the driver but have not been able to download one yet. A scan on Driver zone indicates the driver is okay but my computer says no. Customer service at HP says the cd drive has no driver but they're wrong. Need help.

Try to go into device manager and simply remove the optical device.

Then, reboot with your internet connection intact (in case it needs to go online...) and it should re-install any drivers it needs.

If this doesn't work... try to install the chipset drivers for your system.

    Good luck.

The driver for the optical drive is included with the OS. You might want to try a Linux disc just to see if it works.
