I purchased the lap top last month and I am enjoying it. It has Vista Home pro and came with 1 gig of Ram. I want to add another gig to it to help Vista run a bit smoother.

The Lap top has 2 512 cards, question is. Do I need to buy 2 1 gig cards to make it 2 gigs. I opened up the back and saw 2 512s so I am assuming that 2 1gig card is the answer.

Is this the correct course of action?

If your machine only has two RAM slots then the answer is yes, you need two 1 gb sticks. Alternatively you could look at a 2gb stick to leave room for more expansion in future.

What benefit would leaving an extra slot for the future? Would 4 gigs work?

    Thanks for your help!

all notebook computers come with 2 memory slots maximum. buy whatever you want that will fit in 1 or 2 slots.

    I bought only a 1 GB DDR2 RAM & removed the older 512 MB....

    SO now i have 1 GB + 0.5 GB = 1.5GB

U dont really need to have 2 GB...I mean you can always manage with 1.5 GB.
As your needs grow u can add another 1 GB later.

4GB would work if your BIOS supports it. But unless you use a 64bit OS, you can't take advantage of the entire 4GB.

x2 to Commander Wolf's comment. 32-bit OS will only handle 3.2GB max
