I just ordered an HP Pavilion dv5t configured with "3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)." If I understand things correctly that means there is 1GB in one slot and 2GB in the other? If I wanted to upgrade to 4GB of ram, would both memory modules have to be the same brand? Could I just replace the 1GB module with an aftermarket 2GB module? If I can, what type of ram would be most efficient? I am thinking it is DDR2 667mhz (PC2 5300). If it is, would I be able to select any of the modules on this page? Sorry for all the questions.

The memory modules do not have to be of the same brand.
DDR2 667MHz should work well.
You can pick any of the modules on that page, preferably from a good brand such as Kingston, Corsair, Crucial, OCZ or Transcend. -
Does this come with the MV chipset..?? If so, it should be able to support PC2-6400 or higher....
-
What is an MV chipset?
edit: Is that short for montevina? How could I tell for sure my laptop supports DDR2 800mhz PC2-6400 or higher? If it does support higher, what would the max be? Sorry for the questions again but I have limited knowlege about this stuff. -
Yep, thats short for Montevina Chipset....
I did read about the HP DV5T before and I read it again and it shows up with the Intel C2D P8600 CPU....So it should have a Montevina Chipset....!!
Well, Montevina is more of a family of chipsets - which has a no. of chipsets within it, each with different features and specs, etc....So unless you get your notebook or you can get the information from HP, what chipset that laptop has got....You really can't say anything about the max ram that laptop would be able to support.... -

Thanks everyone for your help. angad1608, once I get the laptop, how can I find out which chipset I have or if it will support DDR3 or a speed faster than 800MHz?
Edit: On wikipedia it seems like all montevina chipsets will be able to support up to DDR3-1333. But does anyone know for sure? -
You can download CPUz or PC Wizard from here....
ATM they might not recognise the MV chipsets, but an update to the software might be just around the corner.... -
Intel has always been very market-oriented, and I highly doubt that they will provide the same Ram Capacity in all the chipsets..!! I think it will be the GM 47 with the best ram support (DDR3, etc)....
Although buying notebooks with DDR3 is not so sensible at this point of time..!! The rates might come down same to that of DDR2, probably in a year's time.. -
Ok thanks angad. According to the online assistance person on HP's website, the dv5t only supports DDR2 anyway...
edit: But one online person said it supports DDR2-1300 and another online assistance person said that information is not available, so I don't know who to believe. I hate it when people at the same company give you conflicting information. -
I don't want to hijack the thread, but does the dv5t come with 667 or 800 MHz RAM?
-
Vladk1000,
ddr2 pc5300 running at 667Mhz
if you want to know for sure, download cpu-z and go into the memory and spd tabs and it will tell you what you have in each memory slot.

In another thread, someone said it is DDR2-800. K-Tron, where did you find your info?
-
It should be DDr2 800. They are shipping the AMD versions with that RAm and the replacement RAM available on HP's parts site for the dv5t are all DDR2 800's.
-
Thanks for clearing that up.
-
usually all laptops come preconfigured with pc5300, which is why I stated that. However I stated that to be sure he would need to run cpu-z.
If I am wrong, I am wrong, but cpu-z is the way to know for sure

Stevenpeven-
Did you get the notebook yet? I'm interested to hear what you think and what specs you got. HP is giving me one of these as a replacement machine...and the woman at Quality Customer Management who is doing it couldn't tell me anything beyond what the website store says as far as specs.
Would also like to see pics of it with this crazy liquid metal texture they keep talking about on the website.
Thanks!
