My HP dv 6500 laptop has worked well for me for over one year. I occasionally use the DVD/CD drive. Recently, neither CD's nor DVD's are detected nor playable. Additionally, when I open My Computer, no CD/DVD drive is detected. Will someone help me diagnose the problem? I'd like to think that I've looked into this fully myself rather than unnecessarily replacing the drive.

    Welcome to notebook review,

Have you tried reconnecting the optical drive. On most laptops, you only need to remove one screw to remove the optical drive. Most optical drives use the ATAPI or mini SATA interface, so if you have another laptop, chances are it will work in it. That can provide a testing bay.
If it doesnt work in another laptop, the drive could be dead. A new drive can be bought either from the notebook manufacturer, or from an online e-tailer.

Thank you for your reply. When you say reconnect the drive, do you mean to unscrew it, remove it, and then reinserting it? I have no experience with laptop hardware but am a quick learner and am willing to open it up and do some basic things. I do not have another laptop to use as a testing bay. Is the optical drive interface simply pins and holes?

Yes, simply remove the optical drive (unscrew), then plug it back in and screw it back in.
It may have somehow come disconnected over the years of using it.

The interface is simply a small port called an ATAPI port. It looks like a small black trapezoid on the back of the optical drive. It is a female connector on the drive, so the port goes in.

Does the system see the optical drive in the BIOS?
You can enter the BIOS by usually pressing Delete or F2 when the system is just turning on
