I have a HP g42-475dx with 320GB 5200RPM hard disk. I want to swap out the hard drive from my other laptop. Its a 500GB 7200RPM. Is it compatible with my laptop?
And if so is there any way I can move my recovery partition to the newer hard drive?

    Yes it will be compatible.

Try cloning your hard drive to move the recovery partition. Acronis True Image is a tool that can do that.

You might want to resize partitions, otherwise you are going to have the difference as unallocated space...(I'm assuming you wanted just the recovery + main OS partition + whatever HP boot partitions there are)
