Hard disk temperature in my laptop frequently reaches around 56 C. However, in the last couple of days it reaches 59/60 (whenever I run some antivirus/spyware programs). The recently installed Active SMART indicates that the airflow temperature is BAD, a failure may be imminent and that the hard disk needs to be replaced immediately.
How can I keep the hard disk temperature under control? How seriously should I consider the Active SMART's warning? Thanks a lot

At 56C, it already seems high to me. Mine is usually 35C to 40C when the room is around 20C. Right now, my room is about 27C and my hard drive is at 44C. Might be time to grab a screwdriver and a can of compressed air to clean the inside of your laptop.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Or get a cooler

cleaning the vents on a laptop doesn't do much for the hdd unless there are vents where the hdd is. you're probably better off getting a laptop cooler and seeing if that helps. but in the future, if your current hdd fails, i recommend getting a western digital. coolest hdd period.

We are covering this in NBR Cooling Central now, go there for more info.

Thanks, All. Cooler seems to be effective. Peak temperature seems to be around 50 C (used to be around 58 C) and seems to hover around 47 when I am just browsing.
