does anyone know how to keep hard drives cool?

my hard drive is located under my palm rest so when the hard drive gets really warm so does the palm rest and touchpad.

my hdd temp is anywhere between 40-50 degrees but i noticed that it takes forever for the temperature to drop back down to 40 when my hard drive is on idle.

i will be getting a cooling pad (zalman nc2000) but want to know if there are any other ways of cooling hard drives.

    thanks

Reducing disk use by windows. Vista is known to thrash the disk. Disabling a few services and process will reduce HD use thus cooler temps.

Other than that the hard drive has to passively cool itself. Getting a good brand HD will also help. I find the old 160gb hitachi's run very hot.

A notebook cooler is always a good idea.

Other than getting more RAM (so you don't use the pagefiles as much, or Vista preloads more for you), there isn't much more than what you are already doing. 5400RPM drives are slightly cooler, but there is little difference.

i already have a WD 320gb 5400rpm hard drive which supposedly is one of the "cooler" hard drives.

what kinda services should i disable in Vista?
    i already turned of indexing

what are you using to measure the temps with?

if it doesn't get higher than that, I wouldn't worry..........

hwmonitor so should be pretty accurate

it has hit 50 when on max load and takes forever for it to go back to 40. i read that's pretty much the limit for where you want your hard drive temp to be. so just want to know how i can cool it more effectively.

i will be getting a nc2000 for sure though

your HD temps are in a safe range. the nc2000 wont make a significant difference on the palm rest heat since it cools beneath. Its the notebook design and placement of the HD is what makes it so warm

Right now my HD temp is 32c and i can feel warmth on the left palm rest. If i can compare it to the right palm rest i can tell the difference

The Zalmans coolers are not performance coolers, they are on the low end spectrum for that.

They are well built, quiet, and pretty but not great coolers for just dropping temps.
