    Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all of you my new computer is running just great - No issues and its been 3 weeks. I am trying to transfer all of my data (About 26 GBs worth in documents, pictures, a couple of movies and Mp3s.) from my old Latitude D600 Laptop to the new computer. Here is the issue - everytime I try and copy any of the data - it goes for about a minute or two and then get a Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) error. I ran CheckDisk / F twice but I still get the same errors. I have tried copying it over the network and to my portable HD - but I stilll get the same error. I have tried copying the whole folder or files one by one - and I still get the same error. I can access the files fine on my computer but I just can't copy or cut them. I have not tried burning them to CDs and this would really be my last resort because I don't want to spend my weekend burning 37.14 CDs!!!

How do I fix this and get my data across to the other computer? Your suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

CRCs (cyclic redundancy check) are hashes of files used for data validation.

So, I'm thinking maybe your hard drive has some data corruption issue that isn't bad enough to notice if you're playing back video or music or whatever that file is, but is enough to mess up file transfers. Could you post the exact error? (Alt+PrintScreen takes a picture of the foremost window in Windows)

Also, if you take a look in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> System, after the error happens, you might find some related messages.

I think both are NTFS. Both Run XP Pro. I have been able to move data quite easily between computers and my portable Hard Drive. I will take screen shots and post exact message later tonight.

Well - I tried 2 options: USB to Portable HDD and over home network using Ethernet cable.

Your, post shows a bad block? I read you said all was good with original set up and Disk check?

Windows see errors with reading? Possible errors with TOC or file headers not seen with checkdisk. If you have read problems with external cases and using network, I would have to look hard at drive or file stucture errors.

I guess you need to try burning a few files to see if this is possible. If so I would say the burned files are fine if you can open them on second computer.

    Hey Hydra,

When I ran check disk - I got some errors but I thought the /F function would fix them - I tried burning one of the files that was geeting the bad block error and it did not work - I got an error saying that the data could not be written. Any suggestion on how to fix this. Thanks.

No, I haven't seen that in a long time. Sorry, I have not had much faith in laptop drives during the last few years.

I'm hoping that none of your files were mission critical. You might get lucky with a file rescue utility that can be booted off a CD or DVD if you have any.

    Someone else have any ideas?

Well, if the data is really important to you, you might try Spinrite. It's $90, but they say if you buy it and it doesn't work for you, they'll refund your money if you ask. I only mention it because it's worked for me.

My experience was, it failed to recover one laptop drive that was very dead, but did actually fix a really messed up 3.5" drive -- windows wouldn't even recognize it, and I couldn't boot with it, but after running spinrite, I was able to get all my data back (not all of the data was recovered, but the things left missing were probably system files or somesuch).

So, that might be an option if you're looking at losing priceless family photos or something. I don't know of any other comparable software.
