Just a quick question. Are hard drive partitions permanent or can you adjust the sizes any time? I'm on a mac btw if that makes a difference.

You can adjust if you have the software that will do it non-destructive. As always, YMMV on the success so always back up before attempting. I now use Acronis Disk Director to do this via a boot CD but there are others that work also

    [IMHO]

That depends. If you have freshly created partitions, changing their sizes will be quick (I remember Partition Magic doing it in a minute). However, once you start filling partitions with data, any change of their sizes which touches the data (if you decrease the size the way that currently existing data won't fit) will require the data to be moved (if the data is movable, of course) and this will require more time.

I did both size changes (with and without data transfer) with help of Partition Magic.

I agree with goofball, you better doing a backup before starting the whole process.

I'll third the motion - back-up, back-up, back-up everything - heck, back-up the back-up (I did that the first time I started playing around with the guts of my old laptop :D).

Acronis Disk Director Suite is a good app; EASEUS' Partition Master is also a good tool, and is free for personal, noncommercial use at home.
