First post, so I hope I put it in the correct place.

I have a Compaq Presario 2210 that the HD went out.
I went and bought and installed a new drive, but the laptop says "no IDE device detected"

The connectors on the old and new drives are different, but from the info I've read they should swap?

The bad HD I'm replacing is a Fujitsu MHT2040AT PL, and the new drive is a Western Digital WD800VE.

The new drive says it's a IDE and the old an ATA-6.
New has 43 pins (I know 44 is standard, but this one has 43) in a male configuration.
Old has 44 pins in a female (plastic shrouded plug) configuration.

Did you take the connector off of the old one and put it onto the new one?

I'm presuming the old one is male also, but it is just wearing a plastic thing on the connector so that it can connect to the motherboard properly.

Never thought it might just be a connector slid over the pins, but you were correct.
Switched the connector and everything's working great - thank you.
