I just bought a brand new HP DM4. Occasionally, the Hard Drive makes a click (just one single click). There is no slow down of my comp and its working perfectly fine. I'm only wondering if this is a sign that the drive is dying or if its no big deal.

HP's have a diagnostic right after POST, I forgot which function key but it basic tool to use. I have PC check at work so that is what I use for actual diagnostics.

It happens rarely, so it doesn't bother me. I'm not sure if its the hard drive; I'm only guessing.

Even so, it's something worth taking a look at. I've had countless people say well I just kept using it until the hard drive completely failed to where OS won't boot and can't retrieve data. Then you are SOL.

I guess I'll boot up BIOS tomorrow and do a check disk. I can't find the HP thing.

just try my suggestion first, it is harmless. If the click goes away, it means it is just the APM at work. Otherwise, you can look further to see what it is.

Its not a big deal. The HD's recording heads is just parking itself away from the platter when not being used. This is to protect the head from crashing into the platter from shock and vibrations.

I was more wondering if it was the "click of death." It doesn't happen on start up though.

Theres no need to alter the APM, theres nothing wrong with your drive!

If its excessively clicking, like once every few seconds thats when you need to use it.

Okay. Thanks. This is my first time with a laptop, so I'm not used to having a hard drive right next to me.
