Hi, I'd like to upgrade my Thinkpad T22 by getting a better hard drive. I looked at eBay, and there were a couple I had in mind. But there were 2 hard drives I was in interested in, a new Toshiba hdd and used Hitachi one. Both are 40GB and 5400rpm, compared to my current 20GB 4200rpm hdd. I've heard that for the most part Toshiba isn't a good brand for hdd's, while Hitachi's are good quality ones, but being that the Toshiba one is a new, I thought that maybe it'd last just as long as a used Hitachi (or any other good brand).

So which one should I get? Also, how's the heat-producing factor on these brands?, because I've noticed how hot the bottom of the laptop where the hard drive (as well as ram) get with my current drive, an IBM Travelstar.

Any suggestions? To reiterate briefly, I'm deciding between either a new Toshiba or a used Hitachi on eBay, both 40GB 5400rpm. I'm not sure which one would be the better choice. Any input or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I'd see if you can pick up a brand new one from a store/online retailer. Seagate and Hitachi are generally pretty good. Western Digital also.

hey thanks for the input. But, I'd like to not spend too much for upgrading this laptop. I forgot to mention, this is a 6-7 year old laptop, and also it's just an extra computer in the house in case someone needs it, so I don't think it really needs the top of the line new expensive stuff. Actually there's a couple of hard drives up for bidding, but I just thought about these two. I don't know, there's also both one new and one used samsung's on there too within similar reasonable price. Basically, would it be better to get a new mediocre-brand hdd or a used good quality-brand hdd?

Is it because this section of the forum isn't as active as the others that nobody's able to post any kind of advice or help?, or did I write my post in a "wrong" way?

Some users here have been replying to other threads in a very brief, to-the-point, genuine way, and that's all I'm asking for here as well. And even if you'd like to write something long and/or want to talk about your experiences, then that's great too, anything you'd like to write would be appreciated.

Occasionally a post can lost in the sea.

As for the drives, I doubt there's much of a difference. I've had good luck with Seagates as of late.

Ok, well, Seagates are pretty good, I'm very happy with mine. I've seen some Toshiba drives fail before so if it were me I'd go Seagate.

    Direct enough?

Toshiba drives are mediocre, get Hitachi/Seagate. Buy a new 80GB 5400 rpm from either Seagate/Hitachi as it goes cheaper and cheaper now.

Okay thanks for the input everyone. Well it looks like everyone (yeah, 3 people, it's pretty crowded in here, :) ) who posted is saying that Seagate Hitachi and WD are good ones. ZaZ, yeah it happens, it's cool. But also, I feel that, some might-a read into what I said too much and... stuff..

But still, thanks for the posts and sharing your thoughts.
