G'day
I recently downloaded the program WinDirStat. I ran the program and the results were interesting. Of my 160bg HDD 54gb was free, about 50gb was used and 40gb was unknown.
What is this unknown section of HDD space?????
Can it be used????

it looks like some of the hard drive is not partitioned or the hard drive is not correctly recognised by your bios (some 137gb limit).
is it a hard drive that you've upgraded yourself? this is the Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades forum after all -
it would help if you told us what your laptop is. as previously mentioned, there was an early bug with XP (and in some cases, old BIOS') that wouldn't let it see more then 137GB, which would result in people exclaiming that they're HDD wasn't the right size and getting help to have the rest recognized once Windows was installed and SP1 (minimum) was installed.
you can find out more about what this unknown space is by going into your Drive Management and seeing what it says.
to do that, click start >> right click My Computer >> click Manage >> click Disk Management...wait for it to analyze what's there and maybe post us a screenshot of what comes up. if it's unpartitioned, it will say unpartitioned space. if it's something else, well...when you post the screenie, we'll know -
No i havent changed it all since i bought it.

if you open My Computer, does it show you partitions, like a C:\ for the OS and then a D:\ for data? I know my Acer came with a 250GB HDD that was pretty much split into two (aside from the restore partitions) where one is for the OS and the other is for data storage.
would you post screen shots of both Disk Management and/or My Computer, so we can see what is being reported about or for this apparently missing space? -

anymore help????

I calculated that you should only get about 149 GB's. Unless my calcs are bad.
But anyways, the reason why it's low is that 1gb is not = 1000mb and 1mb not = 1000 kb. That's why on the packaging of any device you always see the claim 1GB = 1000MB or stuff like that.

It's a good explanation. -
I'm not wondering why there isnt 160gb on my hard drive. I am confused about those pictures.

Thats unallocated space, I guess.

What is unallocated space and does it have any use????
If its useless how do i get rid of it??? -
Anymore help??????
