I've got a Samsung NC10 with the standard 5400 RPM Hitachi 5K320 160GB drive - I would like something perhaps a little larger and faster, but most importantly something with a lower power usage.

I've seen recommendations for the 500GB drives - but I don't really want to spend that much. Any recommendations on 160-250 GB drives?

Look for a single platter drive, such as the Hitachi 160GB 7K320 or 250GB 5K500, but really value wise, the 500GB 5K500.B or 320GB 7K320 can be had for less than $80-90 and the single platter versions aren't 50% of that price.

If you want to save power get an SSD, HDD's do not use much power to begin with, I doubt you would notice any difference.

    SSD's are too expensive.

Was looking at under £50 - the 5K500.B is £85 ish.

What is your purpose for upgrading? If you need the space, wait a bit and invest in a bigger hard drive. If you want less power consumption, don't bother wasting any money since it will give you minimal return on your investment.

If you wait for a month then the single platter 250GB version of the 5K500 may show up. Span.com show it as 28 days.

Be aware that not all SSD uses less power than HDDs.
