Hey guys I have two offers on the table on my GTX460M.
One person is offering a GTX280M and $40.
Another person is offering a GTX260M and $100.
I have limited cooling, but how much less real power (ignoring the TDP) does the 260M use? I was considering undervolting and dropping the clocks on the 280M, something I dont want to do too much on the 260M as they tend to be lower binned chips (they have the same core voltage of 1.0).
How much difference do those dissabled units make? If I dropped the clocks would the 280M technically be more efficient per Mhz or would it make little difference and I should take the cash?

The 460m and 260m are pretty similar regarding power consumption as far as I know... and so is the heat dissipation, at least as far as I experienced.
The 280m runs definitely a couple of degrees hotter than the 260m.... if you have concernings about the cooling take the 260m imo. It still performs ok in most of the recent games...
I would get for the 260m as I can't see a lot of advantages in downclocking the 280m, and I also think you should get more than 100$ and a 260m for the 460m.... -
I would get the 280M with the $100 and then undervolt it if possible.
It should be possible. -

Hey man, the guy offering the 260M went to $120 so I went with that.
I have had a look at the bios and there are lots of voltage levels to choose from. I am hoping nvidia inspector will allow me to change it in software before I comit to a bios flash. -
Hey meak, card shipped out today, Paypal sent too. Check your e-mail. Thanks mate. Looking forward to the 460.

Given your options, I'd say keep the 460m.

Keep the 460m... which does not go to full 3d clocks?
Its about as fast as the 240M in that case, more shader power, much less memory bandwidth (600mhz effective (200mhz 192bit GDDR5) vs 975mhz 128bit DDR3 ) -
