A hard drive caddy holds the hard drive. The drive/caddy combination is then inserted in the side of the laptop. Not all laptops use hard drive caddies. If your laptop uses a caddy, then yes, it is necessary, if not, then no, as one cannot be used anyway. Caddies are particular to each laptop.

You may be able to rig one up. The HDD caddy is designed to minimize vibration and movement, but I would check ebay and google for the caddy first before I rigged something up.

I'll pick onew up then was just wanting to know if there was any main reason for a caddy apart from holding it in place ie power circuit

The use and design of a caddy was a decision made by the engineers who designed your particular make/model of laptop.

They have absolutely no impact on the function and performance of the hard drive itself. Its only function is mechanical... they can make installing / removing hard drives easier, depending on how your particular laptop model was designed.
