It's just started clicking. I've tried restarting, readjusting. Is it just a matter of time or can I prevent it from dying?

just a matter of time... the more it reads/write the more the disc platter inside will get scratched and pretty soon bad sectors will start popping up.
make sure though that it's actually the hdd and not the fan. -
Regardless if it's the HDD or the fan, I'd still back up everything right now if you haven't done so already.
If you have another notebook, or an external HDD dock, try moving the HDD there and see if it continues to click. If so, it'll die sometime in the near future, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. -
I have nothing to back up thankfully.
The clicking stopped after restarting it again, unplugging everything, and letting it sit... but I'm assuming it's going to come back - freaked me the hell out!
It sounded very much like it was coming from the hard drive bay, which isn't near the fan. I'm fairly certain that it was the HDD - not sure why it stopped but I'm glad it did. -
Glad it is gone, but I wouldn't still trust that drive 100% and keep important data on it
-
If it is the drive, it may or may start clicking again, the only reason it won't start again is if the drive dies completely before getting a chance to click again, and it will be sooner than later. Image the drive, get a new one and put the image on it now, while it still works.
The next time you turn off the system (or standby) could be the last time the drive functions, or it may work for a few more weeks, but I wouldn't count on the latter.
Hard drive clicking = dead?
