Hello, my hard drive's SMART is telling me that the hard drive might fail in the future. Windows vista also pops up messages about every 10-20 minutes telling me to back up data and replace the hard drive.

So, what are certain specifications I need to have when I purchase a new hard drive? If the packaging/ebay description says that it is a sata laptop har drive, will that drive work? Or do I need to look at other things like size? or anything else?

    Thanks

Like most any merchandise, when newer and faster ones are released the older ones become available for less money. A new one can probably be had in your price range, with the assurance that it is new and (had better be) dependable, and have a warranty.

Ask yourself why would a used HDD be out of the machine and for sale....

I would buy a new drive from newegg.com. There is a wide variety of drives there to pick from.

Where do you guys get the idea that one is used? Can you just tell that ebay is being shady with the way he words stuff? Or do you know it is refurbished because that is a old hard drive?

    How about this one?

I don't see any advantage from one drive to the next in a given price range.

I would never buy a harddrive on ebay. Its a bad idea. I know my friend bought a sata harddrive and it was relabeled with a fake sticker. The guy sold him a 20gb drive labeled as a 500gb wd.
The price of mechanical harddrives is so low that their is no point trying to get one other than new.
Zipzoomfly, newegg and tigerdirect usually have very good harddrive prices.

What laptop model do you own?
If its an older system it may use IDE based harddrives, so we just want to make sure you are getting the right type of drive.

oh, okay thanks ahl395, I didnt even notice that ;)
than yeah go for one of the 320gb 7200rpm drives. They are really fast and very cheap.
Usually zipzoomfly has the 7K320 for like $60 after rebate, which is an insane deal.

Both SMART and windows vista quit giving me warnings that my hard drive was going to fail. Do you think I should still get a new hard drive? I store everything of any importance on a pen drive. So I don't mind doing a fresh restart whenever.

You should definitely replace the drive if its coming up with errors.

Most laptop manufacturers have a 3-5 year warranty, so you should be able to RMA your old drive and get a new one in return. You can either keep the refurbished drive, or sell it and buy a new harddrive.
