My hard drive is making licht knocking noises when its spinning. Is it going south on me?

It is normal for hdd`s to make some noise, it`s normally just the read/write head`s moving or it parking and unparking to save power, their is a piece of software called hdparm that can disable the power mangment.
Have you checked the smart data? if not download HDTunePro Trial and check it.

Spot on John, the hitachi in my Dell D610 is 5 yrs old and has been doing that for at least the last year, no issues, but I would recommend a full image backup to an external drive just in case.
Kojack FYI mine is silent, only does it once in a while during writes. -
I will backup to my external soon. its not even when its writing, just spinning..sounds "loose"..

How much mileage does it have on it?
If you've been using it for a while and this is something new a backup is definitely in order. -
