    Well....it really depends upon which HDD you laptop supports....IDE or SATA..!!
    Download PC Wizard 2008 and check in drives > storage controller, which type of hdd u have....

    i guess it's IDE i didn't even know, i thought all 2.5" would fit lol. thanks for the reply.

    IDE would have loads of pins protruding outwards....and the SATA would have a socket type thing....!!

    I'm 99% sure that the XPS M1710 takes a SATA HDD.

    The XPSM1710 was only available with the serial ata interface.

    I have a slightly used 160gb 5400rpm hitachi sata drive from my lenovo T61. It has less than 100 hrs of use on it. I will let it go for $60 shipped if you want it.
