Does the drive spin up? FindNTFS or FindPART may be able to recover the data. I've used it before successfully, I forget which option I had to select to bring up a listing of restorable directories. SpinRite can sometimes repair things long enough to recover data but I haven't had much luck when the drive is too far gone to boot from. Plug the drive into a USB adapter on a working PC or notebook to use FindNTFS or FindPART, or leave it in the notebook and boot the (not free) SpinRite CD.

I recommend getting a notebook SATA/ATA adaptor to USB. This way you will be able to recover the data and save it to your desktop.
As flipfire mentioned many companies charge insane amounts for data recovery, so just try it yourself.
If you really want to have another company recover your files for whatever reason, than I would go with Acronis.

    Hi all,

I'm having a problem with a WD USB external drive. It deosn't show up on OS X, and on Windows, shows up, but can;t properly copy data. It is still spinning though.

I'm trying to use FindPart. Does anybody know the procedure or have instructions on how to go about recovering the data?

    thanks,

    p
