    Hello.

I'm considering buying Asus A6JM laptop, but from what I heard there is 4200RPM hdd. Since it is kind of slow I'm thinking of replacement. I have the following options since I'll be buying in specific store. All of those units are ATA/100. I was always using Seagate hdd's and I was happy with them but they're particularly expensive. What other brands mentioned below are worth looking at? Which parameter, speed or buffer is more important?

    Hitachi TravelStar E7K100 100 GB (7200RPM, 8MB) - 170 EUR

    Samsung SpinPoint M60 120 GB (5400RPM, 8MB) - 123 EUR

    Seagate Momentus ST910021A 100 GB (7200RPM, 8MB) - 165 EUR

    Seagate Momentus ST9120822A 120 GB (5400RPM, 8MB) - 182 EUR

    Seagate Momentus ST9120821A 120 GB (5400RPM, 8MB) - 150 EUR

    Toshiba MK-1032GAX 100 GB (5400RPM, 16MB) - 115 EUR

    Toshiba MK-1234GAX 120 GB (5400RPM, 8MB) - 138 EUR

    WD Scorpio WD1000VE 100 GB (5400RPM, 8MB) - 105 EUR

    WD Scorpio WD1200VE 120 GB (5400RPM, 8MB) - 120 EUR

I quoted the price also, it's not my first priority and I'm willing to pay couple of euros more if there is a good reason for that but on the other hand I don't want to spend more than it's necessary. Which model is particularly worth of buying and why?

I know I could run a google search for benchmarks of those units, but I believe that feeling is more important and I'm not buying laptop to run benchmarks on it.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I'm using Hitachi 80GB 7200rpm, it works fine. The both Seagate and Hitachi also support PATA 100 and 8MB cache. May be Seagate has 5 yrs warranty. If you choose a fastest one, go for Hitachi and Seagate.

the stock A6JA from my location uses Hitach HTS541010G9AT00 100GB 5400rpm .. i think it is 5K100 series

and the harddisk runs HOT .. it can reach 65C degrees on my A6JA on heavy harddisk use.. the Hitachi website only recommend up to 55C degrees..

I think A8 series or S96J has a better harddisk ventilation

Or, check the power consumption of the harddisk you are looking for to make sure that you get a fast harddisk with low temperature :) ..

The E7k100 is intenfed for blade servers and therefore lacks some of the power saving features of its 7k100 notebook cousin.

Personally I would buy the cheapest 7200rpm drive which is the Seagate momentus 100GB. You'll notice a huge difference jumping from 4200rpm... What is your current HDD temps? If its in the forties get 7200rpm but if its close to 50 or above already get a 5400rpm drive.
