My notebook mobo recently crapped out.Can I put my hard drive into an external encloser and use it with my new notebook? My dead puter has an XP SP2 OS and my new puter has Vista Basic 32bit.I'm not sure if the HD is ata, sata,or esata.I could pull it and find out.

As long as the HDD isn't damaged, there should be no problem just placing it in an enclosure and reading the data from it that way.

You'll either have an IDE or SATA interface for your laptop hard drive. Make sure which one it is before purchasing an external hard drive case. Also make sure it's a 2.5" external case too. You shouldn't have any issues transferring your data if the HDD isn't damaged as Hiro mentioned.

Thanks guys.Could I still run XP and move files to and from the external?

You cannot boot the XP installation of your external hard disk. But you can copy files to and from it.

Cool.Thanks.
