Hi, I have a Western Digital 160 GB 5400 RPM HD. The model is WD1600BEVT. Anyways, I don't really ever use much hard drive space. At maximum I usually fill up my hard drive about 30-60 GB, haha. I want my laptop to boot up faster, and do better with applications (moreso than it already does). What's the fastest hard drive I can get? Keep in mind, I don't really need hard drive space, so if for example, a 160 GB 7200 RPM HD is faster than a 320 GB 7200 RPM HD, then suggest it. I want more performance, but I don't wanna pay more money for space I surely won't use. Thanks for reading!

WD1600BEKT is the fastest hard drive until Hitachi 7K500 250GB is available.

    I posted a review here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=379623

Performance improvement may be less than you think, as you can read in the review. Your WD performs similar to the Hitachi drive in the review.

SSDs sound great but they're still relatively new technology ($$$). The SSD thread is too long so I'm not sure which one would suit my needs best. I hear the OCZ Vertex is the best bang for buck

Thanks for the thread link. It was good to see a comparison that wasn't just pure benchmark #'s :D

Looking to spend under 100 for a good reliable SSD. Doesn't have to be the fastest in the world, and honestly, it doesn't need much capacity either. I only have 30-60 (this is my usual range) GB right now because I am trying to fill up my HD :)

Anyways, any suggestions? MLC/SLC doesn't matter, but I want it to be reliable and I want it to perform better than either this HD, or the WD160BEKT/any other "fast" hard drive

Doubt you will get a good one for <$100. Cheapest you're going to get is the OCZ Vertex 64 (60) GB MLC for $130.
