I've read all the threads pertaining to the dreaded arm parking clicking noise, and unfortunately it seems like some drives can't be remedied.

I tried all the fixes on this Fujitsu drive, and none of them work at all, not NHC, not hdparm etc.

The only way to stop it clicking is to turn my laptop off, then back on again.

So anyway I am going to buy a new hard drive, I was going to get a Western Digital 120gb, or 250gb, but I heard someone say that the 120gb is prone to clicking.

Does anyone know of a good HD that's known not to click? :D

    Cheers.

it might be a power saving feature or fall detection. My Thinkpad T42 clicks when it detects sudden movement though I think you are referring to something else.

You may want to consider Hitachi and use the Feature Tool to changes the acoustic settings.

I also found the WD2500BEVS to be relatively quiet.

Fujitsus and Seagates are pretty noisy.
I`d get a Hitachi or a WD with a big size,250GB or more.

Eleron - why the big size? Does this have anything to do with it?

I had a seagate that came with this laptop before, it actually just conked out, completely failed one day. Until then though, it was 100% quiet :D

All I can add is my FZ has a Seagate - my first experience with Seagate - and it clicks all day. I have had Hitachi and Toshiba's before and my HP desktop has a WD 320 in it. All of those have been really quiet - my last Vaio had an Hitachi in it and I never heard it run.

I am getting a Hitachi soon (as John mentioned above, Hitachi has software that's allows for some acoustic adjustments) - or sticking it out until a 64gb SSD gets under $300!! (OK, I guess I'll be getting the Hitachi).

Yeah I know, they do look attractive, but I can't justify the price at the moment. I'll wait till they drop a bit. OR if I simply can't find any laptop drive at all that doesn't click :D

    Bump :D

I'm about to buy a new drive, either this 250gb WD - ebuyer.com/product/132386

Or this 160 gb Seagate ebuyer.com/product/108779

On ebuyer, a few people seem to mention a clicking sound from the WD, but not from the Seagate.

Does anyone here have experience of either of these drives?

I am not that worried about a general spinning/reading noise, that's bearable, what I can't stand is the horrible loud tocking sound that my current Fujitsu suffers from (head parking, aggressive power saving).

The Seagate definitely did it for me. I use EEEhdd_tray to stop it from doing that now.

My Seagate 320GB 5400rpm is very quiet, without having to do any tricks with acoustic management.

Goofball, what Seagate do you have?

And Mystery, do you think it has anything to do with the size of the drive? I've noticed that more people have reported smaller drives tocking.

Thanks for the info, so you do have the one I'm looking at.

    What is EEEhdd_tray?

I googled it but couldn't find anything.

I tried a bunch of stuff on my fujitsu, including hdparm, and nothing worked at all, still the horrible tocking sound.

I'll definitely get a SSD when the prices drop. I do need a decent size HD too, that's the thing.

What are the largest SSD disks around now?

I agree. They are also cheaper than others (in Europe, at least).

I tried many of them. They also click a little bit.
