Well, i have a lenovo Y580 with the 5400rpm 750GB harddrive. When i turn on the machine, it starts clicking and didn't recognize my hard drive via BIOS. But when i turn off and on it again for a few times, the harddrive seems to be detected and boot normally without any clicking sound. I search for some info and a lot of them say to use the S.M.A.R.T to check the harddrive, but it says my hard drive is fine and "Healthy". Do i need to change my hard drive ASAP or are there any way to fix it?
Your reply will be appreciated.
Thanks before.

AFA I know there is no easy fix. I would first backup any data you want to save to an external hard drive. If you want to save the hassle of reloading Windows (if the drive fails) make a system image or clone the hard drive to an external hard drive. Since BIOS is having a hard time seeing it I would look into a new hard drive or SSD. IF you are still under warranty you could continue to use it till it fails then get Lenovo to replace it.

Thanks a lot for your reply Josea. I search for some info that when the hard drive start clicking, it means the hard drive is dead, but whats wrong with mine?

Glad to try to help! I had this bookmarked and it reminded me Hard Drive Clicking | Hard Drive Clicks | Hard Drive Noise if I listen very carefully to my 5 year hard drive in a dell D610 (with my ear against the case) I can hear very faint sounds and have for many months Hard Drive Clicking | Hard Drive Clicks | Hard Drive Noise. Loud clicking is often an indicator that you will have issues in the future

It really depends on the noise, some drives will make small clicks which are natural, I would still backup everything if I were you and run diagnostics on the drive. Start with a good old chkdsk and move on to more in depth scans if that doesn't reveal anything.

I would run Hard Disk Sentiment program and if it says 100% for health, then probably no reason to worry

HD Tune (the regular version) will let you scan your drive for errors - HD Tune website
Realistically though I'd just call Lenovo this point and ask them to ship a replacement hard drive ...I wouldn't trust the drive after that behavior. -

The HDD 'click of death'?
Backup your data: get a new drive.
NO; this is not 'normal' at all.
And the fact that your computer 'eventually' recognizes the drive is the biggest indication its failing as we speak.
Good luck. -
It depends on the click. The pair of WD hard drives click once each (very loudly) during startup or spindown. But if it's a "click, click, click, CLIIIIIICKKK" that repeats over and over, that is a sure-fire sign your drive is dead or dying. As everyone else said, BACK UP YOUR DATA NOW!

As everyone else here said, back up your data to another drive! Then afterwards, I'd either replace the HDD yourself, or call up Lenovo and have them fix it under warranty.

Yes, as other have said beyond the drive making regular noise in usage if the clicking is loud and usually more frequent that is a good indication a drive is on the way out. Even a brand new drive can be DOA or go bad at any time since it is a electrical device and anything electrical/hardware wise can fail without warning or after warranty expires. So I would find another drive USB or USB memory and off load your precious data/files you created and replace that drive either warranty or straight replace it yourself-since the software can always be reinstalled but not your data/files you created those are the parts you should be more concerned about more then the HDD. Is if it goes out will I get the date/files back most instances sometimes you can get some back but most times you loose the important files. So don't think you will be able to recover all the data you will loose some of it especially if the head touch the platter that area sector of data will be junk at that point. So do the wise think backup your data/files-the software you can always redownload or install from cd/dvd-that way you can have peace of mind that if the drive goes out you still have your data/files to copy back to the software to work with.
