this will be the first time i might have to replace a harddrive for my desktop *dell dimension 8200.. so
i want to purchase a new seagate harddrive. since my desktop is 4 years old.. are the harddrives in the market now compatiable? ...what is ata? sat?

I'm not a 100% on this but IDE/PATA use the 40 pin connector to the motherboard and the PATA supports parallel hard drives, but it is a limit of half a meter. The SATA is a serial ATA drive and uses a 7-pin connector which is much easier to route through the case. It has a limit of 1 meter. The IDE I believe has a usable limit of about 100MB/sec, whereas the SATA can support 150MB/sec. I'm no expert in this field, so feel free to correct me if anything is incorrect.

I looked on the internet what drive a Dell dimension 8200 contains, and I found out that it is a :
Hard drive 60 GB (7200 rpm)
Interface Ultra ATA
So, any drive with Ultra ATA (IDE) interface will do.
