If I was going to order this laptop: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8662-built-clevo-m860tu-p-2564.html?wconfigure=yes
What would be a better deal? A 7200 rpm 320 gb harddrive or a 5400 rpm 500 gb harddrive? Large space is important to me but also transfer speeds are too. What do you guys recommend?

I personally go for the faster drive at start. If I need extra storage, then an external will do.

The 320 7200 would beat the 500 5400 rpm but not by too much.

Check out that table those are read write times you can change benchmarks for your needs -
It depends on your needs. Since I've already brought an external HDD, I'd go for the 320 now, but if I didn't have it, I'd get the 500 since I store a lot of pictures, videos, and music on my machine.

Alternatively, you could go with the base hard drive and then upgrade to a 500GB 7200RPM aftermarket for the best of both worlds.

I guess we can all dream. That way, you get two hard drives.
EDIT: Actually, you do know that a 500GB 7200RPM is in the options, yeah? -
-
And the current 500GB 7200RPM option isn't good. Seagate 7200.12 isn't the leader in terms of speed and latency (even though it should in theory).

I won't pretend to be an expert in hard drives, but doesn't that have something to do with the number of platters or something?
