    Hey

I have a vaio fz38m and i am taking the leap to win7.
At the same time i am thinking about uppgrading my hdd to increase storage and performance as my current drive is making funny noises (click of death???)

I dont want to overheat the computer so a 7200rpm might be too much, is it worth the speed or should i go for a WD 500 gb 5400rpm???

    WHat do you recon?

For the clicking you may want to try QuietHDD.

For the upgrade the WD5000bevt is a very good choice. Good mix of price, performance and power consumption.

If you can get the Hitachi 7K500 for a similar price it's worth a look too.

The hitachi is a 7200 rpm?? Has anyone with an fz installed a 7200 rpm drive without experiensing overheating or risk of the gpu breaking, as ive heard alot of rumors about the gpu being quite sensitive in these models...

The Hitachi 7K500 doesn't seem to get very hot.

    How nice,

I just found the Seagate Momentus 500GB SATA 2.5" (16MB Cache / 7200RPM) ST9500420AS Whitch seems to have gotten a good review from toms hardware, it seem as a solid performer at a reasonable price, just 25% above the wd 5400rpm.

I reasly would like the performance bump but without the noise and heat, paying a bit more for it isnt a problem

I would not recommend the Seagate 7200.4. It performs well in synthetic benchmarks but not as good in real life. Read this page for a clarification:

If you want max. performance go for Hitachi 7K500. Or get the WD5000BEVT.

That thread is about the Z, not the FZ. As far as I know it's allowed for the FZ.

Thank you for your answers, think i have decided on the WD blue,
Not sure if il go for the cheaper 320 gb or the 500gb, i assume they are similar in performance, since where i am buying them from the will have the same price/gb ratio.. If the 500 performs better i will have that one!

Wel i think my fz is beyond warranty at least the 1 year, not the extended 3 year for the gpu issue. Thakns for all the advise, im more used to desktops and didnt know much about the 2.5 drives in terms of performance and such, since im worried about the heat as i sometimes have the pc im my lap il go for the 5400 range :)

It will be very hard (impossible) to notice a difference between 320GB and 500GB.

But your disk will become slower when it's getting full.

    Good choice imo.

If you need some help on the proper order have a look at the Sony forum. Lots of guides there.

As far as I remember it's key to have no devices without drivers in the Device manager before installing the Vaio shared library and utilities.
