I am looking to replace the Hardisk in my Dell M1530 and am not sure which of these 3 to choose. I am looking for a 7200rpm hardrive for that little boost in performance.

The things I look for are:
    1) Reliability
    2) Quiteness
    3) Coolness
    4) Performance

I have narrowed it down to 3 choices with the largest one having more space, but please discount size as a consideration for now and consider the four points above. I have not been able to find 500gb offerings by WD or Hitachi.

My gut feeling is either the WD or Hitachi hardive but I'm not sure as to which to go for and as stated above am not sure if they have 500gb offerings. So if somebody who has owned or owns one of these hardives could chip in with their opinion it would be appreciated.

I do want a fast hardrive but am very mindful of quiteness and coolness.

Hitachi supposedly has an incredibly reliable drive....although it may not be the quitest. I like them, and fujitsu's..not that my opinion means a whole lot!!
    good luck!

The Hitachi 7K320/WD3200BEKT are the best bang for the buck.
If you want the best performance out of your system get the Hitachi travelstar 7K500

I would opt for the Western Digital. I've had nothing but great experiences with their drives, up to and including my latest notebook drive, a 320GB Scorpio Blue.

If silence is your priority I recommend WD5000BEVT. It's quieter than the 7200rpm drives while the difference in speed is insignifcant.

If speed is your priority I recommend WD3200BEKT or waiting for Hitachi 7K500.

    Thanks for your opinions.

A little split but that was expected.

Does anybody have anything to say about the quietness or coolness of the drives, especially the Hitachi travelstar range?

how's your money range? (you know what will come next.. :)

for performance, quietness and coolness, nothing beats an ssd.. but you can't have more than 256gb currently, and it costs very much compared to a hdd.

I am not looking for an SSD.

My price range is up to £80 - $140.

The Hitachi is the most reliable one! I don't know about the other three factors you listed but I guess it's performance is very good. Anyhow... Hitachi is the most reliable one without a doubt.

    Me again.

I bought the WD 320GB 7200rpm drive. It ran super cool, performance was good, but the vibrations were very bad; felt as if my computer was shaking. So I have decided to send it back and opt for the cheaper Hitachi. Somebody may find this feedback useful.

I will report back on the Hitachi.

    Why don't you get a 5400rpm WD5000 or WD6400BEVT.

You're safer for vibration with those.
