I was told by my IT that my hard drive was bad in my HP laptop. He said I must by a specific type hard drive to meet HPs power requirements. I find this rather odd, but I need to ask.
Its a HP dv3510nr from 2008. Its my wifes work laptop, nothing special. I was just going to buy a hard drive of the same or a little larger size, install and put Windows 7 on it.
Any recommendation for hard drive for this laptop?

Well a standard notebook drive from seagate would probably be a solid choice.

Thanks, I figured a another hard drive would be fine, without an HP label on it. I guess I need to search and look for a 250/320gb hard drive 5400 rpm. SHe has an external for all the important stuff.

Any 2.5", 9mm thick HDD will do, even a 7200RPM. The best performers are the Western Digital Scorpio Black 500/750GB and the Hitachi 7K750/7K500.

IT told you that you must have an HP-branded HDD to work with that laptop? Either they are getting some incentive from HP to push product, or they're sadly clueless.

Above posters have already given good advice, so I'll just say ditto.

Thanks Guys, I had to ask. I should have known better, but, I had to ensure I was correct in assuming he was not being straight forward.

don't worry about it, when you're unsure about something it's always best to ask. We all started small in the tech knowledge department at one point.

Always better to ask as tijo said.

I suggest a WD Scorpio Black hard drive, or a Hitachi 7K500. Both have fast 7200RPM spindle speeds and are of good quality. I own and depend on several.
