Hi, I only have a periphery knowledge of laptop components and was wondering
if someone could help resolve a problem I have.
I bought a Travelstar 5k500 hardrive for more space in my XPS m1710. I knew it
was a bigger than normal drive but assured by the seller that it was compatible
with my machine, which confirmed by Hitachi;

Trouble is, I can't get it to fit! Either in the caddy or without it, it doesn't fit
into the machine. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I dont know why Hitachi's website says it will fit. The drive is 12.5mm thick, and will only fit into a few ASUS and Clevo chassis. I have seen and used a XPS1710 before and it will only fit 9.5mm thick drives.
The Hitachi 5K500.B will fit into your XPS1710, but the 5K500 will not.
The "B" denotes that the drive is a newer revision based on two 250gb platters and a standard 9.5mm thick casing.
You should return your harddrive and get a 500gb 5400rpm drive which will fit in your system.
The 5K500.B, WD5000BEVT, Seagate momentus 5400.6, and Samsung HM500LI will fit into your XPS1710, as they are all 9.5mm thick 500gb 5400rpm drives.

Great! Thanks for your help. I've emailed Hitachi support and am waiting for their response on misrepresenting their product.
