I think the sonicmaster external subwoofer on my q550lf is one of its defining features and is why I can still spend hours browsing the web on it, because I know if I need to listen to anything that I can enjoy it. Is the external sub destined to leave us, leaving us with bad laptop sound once again? In the future I want a 1060 based laptop as to eventually forgo my gaming desktop (yay for smaller fooprints) but I cringe that I may need to move back to an external speaker setup like all my older laptops.

Considering I only vaguely remembered that being a thing I would say so.

Considering the quality of sound that BT portable speakers are capable of, a 'built-in' solution is not in the running anymore (especially when you still have to carry an external sub anyways...).

    See:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/marshal...uetooth-speaker-black/8582096.p?skuId=8582096

For $199 (on sale) any notebook manufacturer will find it impossible to match the sound quality, volume and rated 18/20 Hr battery life.

I'ma stop you right there..cause you dunno wtf your talking about. SBC compressed audio is horrible.. and no laptops support AptX.

Also I find that the one external non powered speaker is far less cumbersome then a full pair of external powered speakers. The external woofer can even be kept behind the screen and out of the way. I don't think you realize how great they are unless you've had one. My past laptops I have used powered speakers as I played ALOT of movies on my laptop. As soon as I got my asus I was able to wash my hands of em.

I see some of the 15 and 17 inch laptops that try and fit in a low range cavity into the case, some with good results. Will need to make a trip to BB one of these days and test em out. -_-

    Lol... I don't huh?

Who said anything about connecting via BT? There is a quality (coiled) cord that I would use too.

    See:
    http://portablespeakersreviews.com/portable-speakers/marshall-headphone/marshall-kilburn-review/

(See the images near the bottom of page...).

This isn't a 'speaker pair' that you would be carrying around, this is a single unit (self contained).

I'll repeat myself again; NO notebook will sound this good with any external sub/internal speaker setup. Ever.

If you want great audio for music (i.e. not just something to make loud sounds with...), then the Kilburn (or something similar/better) is what you should be concentrating on today. Yeah; even for a notebook computer.

I have not been too impressed with any notebook computer's sound. Even when connected to external (2.1 or better) speakers/amps.

The Kilburn impresses me. And I'm known to be more than just a little picky about the things I'm interested about. ;)

FWIW I use DIY Bluetooth audio receiver (RPi2 with Bluetooth 4.0 dongle & USB sound card) channeled to external amplifier and pretty happy about this setup. Wireless sound isn't perfect, but it ain't all that bad either - and no laptop sound system compares to such setup anyway.

Starlight... so your RPi is outputting via quality USB sound card..how are you sending the audio data though? Not by a2dp, right?

    @jeffmd it uses A2DP - SBC. I'd love to force A2DP - MP3, but don't know how. )=
