I am considering picking up an express card 34 SSD. It would be strictly used for local backup on my notebook. I know there are some concerns about speed but since I'm only using it for backup, it should be a problem?

The other issue, I've read about is reliability, seems like they aren't the greatest.

Last, seems like not many manufacturers make these, anyone have any recommendations?

My recommendation is to get an external hard drive instead.

If you're not worried about speed, then you really might as well get an external spinner instead, as it'll be much cheaper. Apart from the reliability issues, I seem to recall reports that those Expresscard SSDs tended to run very hot, as well, which might tie into those reliability issues.

I've used an expresscard SSD for a while. I loaded Aion and HoI 3 on it, and ran them off it for a while, no problems with either speed or reliability. Both ran as fast (they actually load a little faster) off the SSD, although the write speed was pretty slow. Its a little warm, but I haven't noticed that much except during prolonged writes and reads. I got,

    (won't let me post a link, its a: FileMate SolidGO 3FMS4D24M-WR 24GB ExpressCard 34 )

I don't know that I'd use this as a backup, you can get an external drive cheaper. I like it as a place to stick a few games or utilities.

i would still get an external hard drive... it still cheaper and u get quite fast read and write and a lot of storage.. if u so desperately want an SSD , get a Internal one...
