Have you ripped off your laptop screen to use as a monitor?
Laptop Converted to 2nd Monitor
1. If you were in college in electrical engineering, what courses would you take that would help you to rip off yoru laptop screen to use as a monitor?
2. Will the monitor actually be take data fast enough to be used as a monitor? What problems can I expect to have with the monitor? Will it just be so poor quality compared to today's modern monitors that it makes it even good enough as a monitor?
2.5. where would be the best place to get the parts for the tutorial needed for cheap or free if you were in college?
3. I have an HP envy x2 core i3 that is a few years old, is very painful to use as a computer because it has become so slow, I am considering keeping the computer just long enough to rip off its monitor in a year or two when I figure out how. Ditto for my even older laptop which uses like a pentium or celeron or something it doesn't say core i anywhere on it.
Or should I just try to get 5 bucks selling each on ebay?

or if it is an older screen with LVDS ( pretty much every screen pre 2013) just get a DVI/VGA to LVDS adaptor board and go nuts. This type of thing has been done for ages with hardware, even longer with software.

Unwise and not a worthy project to start with...there are better endeavors you can better put your time into. -
There are two types of laptop monitors, LVDS and Displayport. Whichever way you go, you need some way to power the backlight, whether it is LED or CCFL. In addition, you need to get the output from your computer to work with the monitor. Displayport is a simple pass-through. LVDS is more complex. You also need some other buttons to control things like brightness and shutting the monitor off. There are tons of kits out there for this kind of stuff, from DIY to simple plug and play. I'm not sure where you would get them in the US, but they are super cheap and plentiful here in China.
You don't have to be in college nor be an electrical engineering major to go the completely DIY route sourcing parts from digikey or mauser and building up a breadboard.
I know the OP is a troll and will never do this anyway, but it can be useful to help even for others who stumble upon this thread or search for information. -
2013? More like 2010.

actually most used LVDS and many/most still do even today, internal DP is now coming into main stream finally though. the big issue was CFL vs LED backlighting which became big around 2010-2011 and having to either setup a PWM LED backlight signal or to setup a high voltage inverter in your kit for CFL

There aren't any classes in ECE that'll teach you how to rip out a laptop monitor. That's a trade skill (if anything), and colleges are more interested in theory and other neat stuff.
If you're looking for a a fun outlet for your ECE experience, get Minecraft and play with redstone circuits. Seriously, it's great. I even turned in one of my ECE lab projects in Minecraft (7-segment display and its control circuits). -

I figure that much....
