I recently purchased a Hitachi 760k 60GB 7200 RPM hard drive to install in my HP zx5280, i popped the hard drive in and when i went to boot up the comp. It started giving me a media read error anyone know what causes this? i cant get the HD to stop giving me this error does this mean its dead/ defective?.

    Thanks for the help.

more info needed it could mean the hard drive is defective or that its not seated in the connector right or that its not compatible with your hardware reason being its too big but that is highly doubtful are you trying to format the drive when you get this error?or will in not boot to windows setup at all when you get the error?

The computer will not boot up after it gets past the "HP" screen it just gives a Media test failure notice.

Are you trying to boot from a CD?

    That's what you should do.

Of course you cannot read the brand new HDD because it's not yet formatted.

So what you have to do is boot from a CD (recovery CD or windows installation CD) and thru that format and install windows.

Did you ever resolve this? I have a ZX5000 that my 80GB drive just failed in. I bought the same drive that was in there (hitachi travelstar) and when installed it could not be found. I discovered the problem was a propretary connecter on the drive that came with this piece of junk. Mine is still under warranty and HP can't seem to ship me the right drive..LOOOOOOOOOOOOSERS!! Everyone has the same problem, not detected since the pins don't connect. What did you end up doing?

Have you tried to remove the adaptor off of the old HD , AFAIK it is removable and should fit your new one.

Well, dont know how different it is on the zx5000 series but on my R3000z it is a matter of just pulling out the adaptor and fixing it on to the new one.

    These 2 pics might help...

    Sorry for the blurry pics

You can use a small screwdriver to leverage the sides of the adapter carefully. Make sure you're CAREFUL. If you break the adapter, HP will not provide a new one to you. I think you need to buy a new HDD in order to get the adapter.

I just gently pulled it out with my fingers. Grab it by the edges and push it out gently trying not to put too much pressure since as venom said getting a replacement might be costly.
