So I bought 2 sticks of bytestore 2gb ddr2 for my compaq cq50-100em laptop. I inserted both sticks and instantly it worked but then after 5 minutes crashed and then wouldn't allow windows to open. Not even in safe mode. So I ran memtest86 and had lots of faults. I tried each stick seperately in each slot and found that one of them worked perfectly and the other not at all. I rang amazon to get a replacement and they sent one out to find it is also not working, either on it's own or as a pair. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks!

I would return both sticks and get a refund as it might be incompatible, then buy some crucial or other branded memory, or you could have a fault memory slot.

That's what i'm thinking about doing. But surely the memory slots are OK as the good RAM works in both without a problem? Thanks for the help!

There are high and low density ddr2 memory sticks, you need to check which your notebook supports in case that is causing your problem.

I have been trying to find that out but there is literally no information about my laptop anywhere! Can you point me in the right direction? HP Compaq CQ50-100em. Thanks!

Just go to crucial.com and run the "system scanner" from the notebook you are having problems with.

Ok the system scanner is saying it's a G50 not a CQ50? Not sure if it matters. It's saying that this RAM: 4GB kit (2GBx2), 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-6400 upgrades for HP - Compaq HP G50 (DDR2 Series) Laptop/Notebook, CT2620166 from Crucial.com will be compatible. £50 does seem quite expensive though do you know anywhere cheaper for this type of memory? Thanks!

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Just search for the spec's and 'best price in XX' where 'XX' is your country.
For example:
DDR2 PC2-6400 best price in UK shows this as one of the google results:

Good luck.
